With the Thanksgiving Holiday right around the corner, many of us have begun to brush off our cookbooks, make a guest list, and begin general preparations for the upcoming holiday. In the midst of all of these preparations it is easy to forget the historical implications of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanksgiving is a time to not only be thankful, to celebrate with your family and friends, but it is also a time to remember the history that surrounds this great holiday.

Did you know that the first Thanksgiving celebration occurred in 1620? Thanksgiving started as an autumn harvest between the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians. The first Thanksgiving Holiday was a three day celebration that hosted over 100 people. For the next two centuries, there were several days of thanksgiving that were celebrated at different times by the individual colonies and states. All of that changed in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that the national holiday of Thanksgiving should be celebrated every November.

As you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, be sure to think about all of the items that you are thankful for in your life. Perhaps you own a home? If so, then working with a great homeowners insurance company like The Schwab Agency, might be on your list of things for which you are thankful.
