While spring brings lovely weather to Texas, this season also brings an increased risk of severe storms, including tornadoes. To prepare for storm season in Texas, consider these three tips.
1. Have an emergency plan.
If you don’t have a storm shelter in your home, know where the nearest safe place is. If you hear of tornadoes in your area, don’t waste time. Immediately get to a shelter. You should also make a plan for family communication in case of emergency.
2. Know where your utility shut-offs are located.
If your home is damaged in a storm, you should immediately shut off the electricity, water, and gas to your home. Doing so can prevent further damage to your home, and protect others.
3. Create an emergency kit.
Your emergency kit should include a fire extinguisher, matches, fire starters, and a flashlight. You should also have a first aid kit, a small supply of water, and some snacks. Extra blankets and clothing, along with basic hygiene supplies, should be packed for each member of the family. Don’t forget to include bottles, formula, and diapers if there are infants in the family.  Pack these items in a large duffel bag, so you can grab it quickly if you need it.
