It’s that time of the year when backyard grills will be fired up more often across the country. Perhaps nobody likes to BBQ like those of us in Texas. As we head into BBQ season here are some safety tips to keep in mind.

  • Never leave an lit grill unattended.

  • Never grill in an enclosed space.

  • Never store propane tanks where temperatures are excessive.

  • Always have a water source nearby.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, In the years between 2007-2011, fire departments in the country responded to an average of 8,800 home and outside fires. These fires resulted in an average of 10 deaths, 140 injuries and $96 million property damage.

Fire is not the only safety issue involved in a BBQ. There are food safety issues as well.

  • Make sure your grill is cleaned after each use.

  • Only use long handled utensils that are made for grilling.

  • Never use the marinade from a meat for a basting sauce.

  • When having a BBQ, keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.
