HO8 Home Insurance Policy Basics
When looking for the right homeowners insurance policy for your house, you may be surprised to find that there are many different types of policies that are available. If you have an older home, you will most likely invest in an HO8 homeowner’s insurance policy to provide coverage for your house.
HO8 policies are most commonly used to insure homes that are at least 40 years old. For older homes that have a replacement value that is much higher than the actual market value of the home, it is usually not possible to invest in a typical HO3 policy because the home has not been updated enough to qualify. Most of the updates that are required to qualify for an HO3 policy relate to the electrical, HVAC, roofing, and plumbing of the house.
There are also many personal situations that may lead to homeowners not qualifying for an HO3 policy. People who have past DUIs, poor credit, or a past bankruptcy may not qualify for an HO3 policy, leaving only a more limited HO8 policy to provide protection.
HO8 home insurance policies are very similar to HO1 policies and will provide coverage for 11 common perils, including:
- Wind
- Lightning or fire
- Hail storms
- Civil unrest or riots
- Explosions
- Vehicles
- Aircraft
- Smoke
- Volcanic eruption
- Vandalism or theft
- Falling objects, such as parts of the home or trees. Keep in mind that negligence or lack of maintenance that causes an object to fall will not be covered by the policy.
