Disasters are scary, but panic isn’t going to help you. Remain calm so you can take action to get yourself out of any dangerous situations.
Have a plan.
Create an emergency plan with your family/cohabitants. Know what you’re supposed to do in the event of an emergency and pick a meeting place outside your home to avoid. Having a plan helps keep you calm and take action during an emergency.
Keep a survival kit.
It’s essential to have a survival kit on hand in the event of an emergency. In a safe place in your home keep an emergency preparedness kit.
The Red Cross recommends you include:
- A three days’ supply of water (1 gallon/person/day)
- Non-perishable food to last three days
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- First aid kit with medications
- Copies of personal documents
- A battery powered radio
- Blankets
- Camera for photos of any damage
- Extra shoes and clothing
- Hand sanitizer and any other necessary hygiene items
