With the changing of the seasons, the colder temperatures mean that our immune systems are more vulnerable. With flu season upon us and the recent Ebola outbreaks, keeping yourself healthy is more important than ever. You do not want to miss all the parties and holiday festivities because you are sick and stuck in bed! A big part of keeping yourself healthy is washing your hands periodically to prevent the spread of germs and sickness.
When should you wash your hands?
- Before, during, and after preparing any sort of food.
- Before you eat.
- Before and after helping someone who is sick or treating a cut or wound.
- After using the restroom, changing diapers, or cleaning up a child who has used the restroom.
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- After touching animals or handling their food, treats, or waste.
- After touching garbage.
How do you properly wash your hands?
- Wet your hands with clean running water (hot or cold doesn’t matter).
- Lather both the front and back of your hands with soap.
- Scrub your hands with the soap for at least 20 seconds.
- Rinse your hands under clean running water, removing all soap.
- Dry your hands with a clean towel or air-dry them.
Using Hand Sanitizer Instead: It’s not as effective as washing your hands, but hand sanitizers do reduce the number of germs on your hands. If you do not have soap and clean running, it will suffice.
